New methods of producing hydrogen seem to solve our energy problems! Or at least that's what it sounds like from reading this article.

The US Department of Energy is investing $375 million in Bioenergy research -- which I take to mean ethanol production. Here's a roundup of links to further information about US initiatives to move us toward ethanol. One nugget I found interesting was that the goal is a modest 30% displacement of gasoline by ethanol by 2030.

Peak Oil In America is an interesting read, particularly the ending part where they note that every president since Nixon has said we have to get off of foreign oil. Well, they didn't find one for King Ronald I, but I'm sure he probably said it.

Much interesting reading in Economic Report of the President. (Warning: PDF) I especially enjoyed Chapter 11, which is about energy. Did you know that we spent 4.5% of our houshold income on gasoline last year? And there are proposed changes for the CAFE fuel mileage standards for the next few years. Also, Chapter 4 of the report tells us that the percentage of the GDP spent on healthcare is rising linearly!

Ethanol -- which offers lower fuel economy than gasoline -- is being mandated as a replacement for MTBE, due to environmental concerns. Restricted supply of ethanol as the changeover deadline approaches is partly to blame for the current gas price spike. One wonders what will happen as more cars start running on 85% ethanol fuel?
